Dia De Los Muertos, San Antonio,Texas 6 Things You Never Knew

Writer's picture: NikiNiki

San Antonio has a rich history of celebrating the "Day of the Dead." This celebration of the loved ones whom have passed is curiously reassuring and comforting as the joy of the after-life is commemorated. Murphy x3 (Max was in University) were lucky enough to be in San Antonio last year just as the festivities were getting started. Every year there is a Cultural Fair celebrating Dia De Los Muertos on the grounds of the Hemisfair. Since the actual day of Celebration is November 2, many of the activities collide with Halloween and begin around the 31st. This year you can join in from anywhere as the event will be online.

There are many interesting facets that make up this spectacular Cultural Event:

Altar Competition: Families or Groups participate in setting up altars of remembrance honouring those who have passed.

Market: Many vendors were on hand to sell various arts and craft items from Latin America and the US.

Entertainment: Throughout the days various artists and bands showcased their talents in many different performances.

Arts & Crafts: There were pockets of stands where everyone can participate in some DIY crafts.

Of Murphy Co Note:

We really enjoyed learning about the cultural significance of the Holiday and can appreciate the symbolism so much more having experienced the event.

So here are 6 things you never knew about Dia De Los Muertos:

1.People dressed for the occasion in typical Day of the Dead Makeup, hair adornments and dress.

2. Altars: The altars were heartwarming and

colourful, with pictures and significant memorabilia

of those who were being immortalized.

3. Skulls and Skeletons: These were used

everywhere in displays and decorations. They symbolize new life to Aztec ancestors.

4. Marigolds: The colour and scent of this flower is said to guide the spirits home.

5. Votive Candles: Each Flame represents a soul who has passed and provides light for their return.

6. Papel Picado: These beautiful, brightly coloured and intricately cut banners are everywhere. It is believed that they flutter when spirits are present.
